Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

In answering Task 1 questions, you can follow this format:

- Opinion (Introduction)

- Idea 1 + Example

- Idea 2 + Example

- Conclusion

Follow-up ideas:

- a house or apartment should be situated in an appealing location

- it should be at a walking distance near occupied establishments unlike in

underdeveloped areas

- house should be well maintained

- apartment’s sophistication

- should have tranquil location

Sample Answer 1

I think it is important for a house or apartment to be situated in an appealing location. For one thing, apartment units or houses located within walking distance to schools, cafes, restaurants or other establishments are more convenient than those located in underdeveloped areas. For example, college students are more inclined to settle near their campus to avoid extra travel expenses and lessen their travel time. For one thing, housing units or apartment complexes located in a good neighborhood or in the central area of the city are generally safer. In these areas, people are less likely to experience security issues and water and electricity supply disruptions. These are just some of the reasons why I think an appealing location is the most important quality for a house or apartment to become a good place to live in.

Sample Answer 2

Personally, a well maintained house or apartment is a nice place to live in. For one thing, it can be considered safe as well. It is clean so it will be free from any pest. For instance, the termites, well maintained houses will always be sturdy because nothing will cause its damage. Also, absence of any pest secures good health. Another, well preserved house or apartment is very appealing to the eye. It seems like it is always new. For example, one of the fine house located in my hometown. The family takes care of it very well such as conducting a general cleaning at least once a month. Even if it was constructed years ago, it is not noticeable as an old house. So for me, a well maintained house or apartment is always the best place to live in.

Sample Answer 3

In my opinion, I think it’s important to consider the apartment’s sophistication.  First, there should be a good layout, as how much space was used or the amount of space between doors, windows and other physical features. For instance, it’s should be spacious in order to perfectly set up the suited furniture for each room. We never want a house that’s really crowded when we started putting up furniture and ornaments. Second, we should also consider the noise. Aside from having good interior designs, it should be situated in a tranquil location. As an illustration, I regretted that I bought my apartment because my neighbors are so disturbing. I can’t even focus when I’m doing some take home tasks from work. Hence, these are the reasons why I think sophistication is one of the most important qualities for a house or apartment to be a good place to live in.

5. ornaments - an object that is decorative rather than useful

Follow-up ideas:

- I disagree, concerts or movies don’t have to be group outings all the time

- I don’t have to coordinate with anyone. It’s difficult to make sure everyone

could go

- I’m free to be emotional. It’s alright when you cry or laugh because nobody

would think that you’re weird

- It’s better to go out alone

Sample Answer 1

Concerts and movies are great group activities, but I think they don't have to be group outings. For one thing, I don’t have to coordinate with anyone. For example, when going to the movies, it would be difficult to make sure everyone would go, choose a section to sit or stand in, pay for the tickets, and figure out the transportation to get there. These things could somehow cause stress to me. Another thing, I’m free to be emotional when going to this kind of event alone. In particular, I admit that I’m a concert crier. It’s a better feeling to have a strong connection to an artist at their show, but when I have friends with me and they’re just standing during this moment. It’s totally not worth it. These are my reasons why I think going out alone in a concert or film is better.

Sample Answer 2

For me, it is more enjoyable to watch concerts or films with a group of friends for some reasons. First, you will not be in the state of boredom. For example, at concerts, there are several people screaming and grooving to every beat of the music without any embarrassment. In like manner, watching films with a lot of companions, you could have opportunity to share your thoughts about the movie and other experiences. Second, there will be fewer expenses. For instance, during concerts and films, you have to buy some snacks to indulge with. As for my experience, my friends and I contributed to buy huge packs of snacks enough for everybody. Each one of us spent lesser money since we didn’t buy food individually. Thus, I strongly conform that being in a group of friends when going to concerts and films is a lot thrilling.

Sample Answer 3

In my opinion, it is more enjoyable to go alone in concerts and films rather than going with a group of friends. First, you’re more likely meet people who share the same interests with you. Going alone in a concert does not necessarily mean you’re anti-social. In fact, going to concerts is a good opportunity to make new friends. For example, I went to a concert alone. I met a girl who complimented me for bringing a poster of the performers and we ended up talking about the band right after the show. Second, you don’t have to worry about if your companion is not enjoying the show. Sometimes you just want to be with someone in a concert or film however that person is not interested at all. I’d rather go on my own in a concert rather than minding someone who seems so tedious. For instance, once I invited my friend to a concert which she’s not familiar with. All along I was screaming together with the crowd while my friend is busy doing something with her phone. I think she got upset, so I never invited her again. To sum up, I prefer going on concerts or films alone rather than with a group of friends because of the aforementioned reasons.

Suggested vocabulary:

1. coordinate- to organize an activity so that the people involved in it work well together and achieve a good result

2. boredome - the state of being bored

3. indulge - to allow yourself to have something enjoyable

4. anti-social - not sociable; not wanting the company of others

5. tedious - too long, slow, or dull: tiresome or monotonous

Task 3

Reading Part:

Graduation speaker should be a business leader

I think the university should invite a business leader to speak at this year's graduation ceremony - perhaps an executive from one of the large corporations in the area. For students, business leaders are excellent role models because they represent the meaning of professional success. They influence people every day, make important decisions, and have achieved impressive salaries. Furthermore, inviting a business executive will help reinforce to the community that our business program is the biggest and best one in the state. Prospective students will read about the speech and will remember that our university has a strong and attractive business program.

Sincerely,

Ryan Brown

What is the student’s opinion?

- the woman disagrees

What is the first reason for student’s opinion?

- it has always been a business person speaking at the graduation ceremony and the school should better consider someone from other professions to speak, like a teacher

What is the second reason for student’s opinion?

- the business program in the university is already well-known and it doesn’t need extra attention

Sample Answer

In the reading passage, a student proposes that the school should invite a business leader to speak at graduation ceremony. He pointed out that business leaders are good role models for students. What’s more, inviting a business leader can remind people that their university has a strong and excellent business program. In the listening passage, the woman disagrees with his proposal because of two reasons. First, it has always been a business person speaking at the graduation ceremony and the school should better consider someone from other professions to speak, like a teacher. They are very influential and have essential roles in the community as well. Second, the business program in the university is already well-known and it doesn’t need extra attention. What needs free publicity is the school’s education program, which is not as well-known as the business one. Therefore, these two reasons suffice the woman’s opinion with the proposal in the letter.

Task 4

Reading Part:

Impression Management

According to some sociologists, as we go about our lives, we try to control or manage the impression that we make on others in social situations. When we do this, we are practicing what sociologists call impression management. Even in everyday, ordinary interactions, we make special preparations - sometimes unconsciously - to convey certain Information about ourselves that influences how others perceive us. These preparations often involve our personal appearance - how we look during the social interaction - as well as the social setting, which is the place where the social interaction occurs.

Question:

Explain how the example from the professor’s lecture illustrates the choice-supportive bias.

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

In answering Task 4, you can follow this format:

- General Idea

- Specific Idea

- Conclusion

Follow-up ideas:

What is the general idea from the reading passage?

- Impression management is the way we manage or control our impressions that we make on others in social situations.

What is the specific idea from the listening passage?

- Professor gives an example of a student who dressed up a little formal because he’s going to have a presentation. Doing this could let others think that he takes his presentation very seriously. Another, the professor shared his own experience when he gave the university president a ride. He cleaned his car and switch into classical music station in order to make the ambience sophisticated.

Sample Answer

In the reading, the article talks about impression management, which means the way we manage or control our impressions that we make on others in social situations. In the listening, the professor gives out two examples to illustrate this title. First, when a student is going to give a presentation to the whole class, he may dress up a little bit more formally than usual. In this way, he could make others aware that he takes this presentation very seriously, that he’s come prepared and that he wants to present to them a high-quality presentation. Another example is that once when the professor gave the president of the university a ride to a meeting across town, he had taken the trash out of his back seat and even had his car washed the day before he gave the president a ride. When the president got into his car, he turned the radio to the classical music station which seemed more sophisticated. The reason why he did all these things was that he wanted to make a good impression on the president. Therefore, by giving out these two examples, the professor explains what is meant by impression management.

What solution do you prefer?

- 2nd solution

What is your first reason?

- he might be able to earn the money and gain the lab experience at the same time

What is your second reason?

- other students might have already been through this kind of circumstance before and the professor is likely to agree with this solution

Sample Answer

In the conversation, the student is facing a problem that he is going to have a free internship this summer at the school’s chemistry lab but he also wants to make some money. There are two solutions. He could choose either to work at the lab during the weekdays and take a part-time job at the bookstore on the weekends or to ask his professor if he could share his internship with another person. If I were to be asked, the latter is a better solution. If he chooses to share his internship with another person, he might be able to earn the money and gain the lab experience at the same time. What’s more, other students might have already been through this kind of circumstance before and it is likely that the professor agrees with this solution. So the student doesn’t need to be afraid that he might leave a very bad impression or something. Considering these two reasons, it is clearly seen that the second one is a better choice.

Question:

What is a policy of moral suasion? Use the Smokey the Bear and recycling campaigns to explain how it works.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

In answering Task 6, you can follow this format:

- General Idea

- Specific Idea 1 + Example 1

- Specific Idea 2 + Example 2

- Conclusion

Follow-up ideas:

What is the general idea?

- moral suasion is when people try to stop polluting the environment by appealing to their moral duties

What is the first specific idea?

- “Smokey the Bear” campaign

What is the example given for the first specific idea?

- a bear dressed up like a forest ranger and stopped people from doing harmful things in the environment

What is the second specific idea?

- recycling

What is the example given for the second specific idea?

- people  have containers where they could put their glass and newspaper

Sample Answer

In the lecture, the professor talks about the moral suasion, this means trying to get people to stop polluting the environment by appealing to their moral duties. She provided two examples to better illustrate this. The first example is the “Smokey the Bear” campaign. A character dressed up like a forest ranger always says “please don’t hurt my animal friends” or “please don’t start a forest fire”. Since this bear looks a little bit childish and cute, people then won’t do harm to the environment because it reminds them of environmental issues and that they should do the right thing to protect the environment. The second example is recycling. The community first promoted voluntary efforts and increased people’s awareness to reduce the amount of the garbage which could be recycled. And then they provided people with containers where they could put their glass and newspaper. At first, a part of people started doing this. Little by little, others followed the herd. And now all the people recycle garbage voluntarily. In short, with these two examples, the professor explains what is meant by moral suasion.
